When I checked out their websites, I found they had an amazing plethora of options and security just for WordPress which I could only dream of at the web hosts I had partnered up with earlier. There was a downside however, the price. I finally came along WPEngine and I decided to sign myself up with them, due to a promotional code which allowed the first 3 months to be hosted for only 4$ a month, instead of the usual 29$.
No. The least expensive plan provides 50 GB of monthly bandwidth. But more important is the number of user visits they allow. For example, the Startup plan offers 25,000 user visits per month. They have ways of differentiating between real users and bots and spammers, and the 25,000 applies only to real users. So 25,000 user visits should be fine for most sites. But the higher level plans offer more visits.

They rely on us to protect them from attacks. As a result of our security layer, we block over 150 million bad requests every month. We proactively block numerous web application attacks, provide security maintenance and craft a one-off plugin/patches for vulnerable customers and automatically upgrade customer sites with the latest security updates.
I self-hosted WordPress for years until I started experiencing crashes every time a post made it to the first page of Hacker News. I switched to WP Engine right before speaking at a major event. Not only did my blog survive the traffic spike, but I’ve doubled the number of subscribers since then and haven’t experienced a single outage yet. It’s nice to pay someone to handle all the hosting BS that we’re no good at. They’re WordPress Pros.

They make things seem easier than they are at times, to sell people on their service. e.g. the idea of instant transfer to them as if DNS delay does not exist. They have some poor recommendations at times. e.g. CName instead of A-Records. This sort of thing benefits them but is not best practice as you cant assign an apex domain to a CName. I found this sort of thing would happen often… they really sell people on the idea that their way is easier and better than everyone else, but going so far as ignoring best practices. This is noticable in their caching as well, which is how they get such great numbers in regards to speed, however it is not best practice to cache so aggressively.
Last year they changed 10 installs to 5 installs for the same price. I'm blown away by their technical support though, in fact, it's the best I've experienced. Check carefully before you sign up and see what all you get for the price since they change their packages often it seems. I've stayed with them since I've had horrid experiences with tech support from other companies in the past, and it's not a fun thing when you spend all night long trying to do all of the research yourself because no one wanted to help you. With that said, I've certainly saved a lot of time and hassle from using WP Engine. Time is priceless and I'll keep spending whatever it takes (within reason) to keep having superior customer service.
This ties into the uptime percentages that web hosts frequently display. Uptime is defined as is the measure of the uninterrupted time that a hosting system experiences. Hosts usually advertise somewhere between 99 percent to 99.999 percent uptime. Assuming a 365-day cycle, 99 percent uptime actually means several days of unscheduled downtime, or not scheduled maintenance, for your sites. That means 99.999 percent brings your site down to only a few hours of downtime for that year. That's the difference between paying for a shared host and paying more for a managed host that will give you at least 99.99 percent uptime. To get to 100 percent uptime would require tens of thousands of dollars a month in hosting and system administration time. The intersection between cost and uptime is where most business owners find themselves, and that's why a managed host is again the choice for more business owners. They can pay five or six times more than a shared host would cost and get a slice of enterprise hosting that would otherwise cost tens of thousands a month.
I knew from the start that the #1 single most important decision would be the hosting provider. There’s loads of options out there and my business partner and I tested several of the key players in the market. Ultimately we went with WP Engine…while not the cheapest option out there, they offer the most impressive list of features. Add to that the quick responses we get from WP Engine’s support team and you’ve got a solid win.
