For more than a decade, Jeffrey L. Wilson has penned gadget- and video game-related nerd-copy for a variety of publications, including 1UP, 2D-X, The Cask, Laptop, LifeStyler, Parenting, Sync, Wise Bread, and WWE. He now brings his knowledge and skillset to PCMag as a Managing Editor. When he isn't staring at a monitor (or two) and churning out web hosting, music, utilities, and video game copy, Jeffrey makes comic books, mentors, practices bass and Jeet Kune Do, and appears on the odd podcasts or convention panel. He also collects vinyl and greatly enjoys a craft brew.

Over the years, WordPress has evolved more than I could’ve imagined, and with more plugins and functionality being added every single day, the demands for a good web host did too. And thus, the search began. After doing a few hours of research for cheap but reliable hosting, I came across multiple hosting providers that provided hosting for only WordPress and nothing else.
Security – At WP Engine, our mission is to help our customers win online. We know that our customers’ sites represent their businesses, their livelihoods. They rely on us to protect them from attacks. As a result of our security layer, we block over 150 million bad requests every month. We proactively block numerous web application attacks, provide security maintenance and craft a one-off plugin/patches for vulnerable customers and automatically upgrade customer sites with the latest security updates.
For this testing, I used a website monitoring tool to track my WP Engine-hosted test site's uptime. Every 15 minutes, the tool pings my website and sends me an email if it is unable to contact the site for longer than one minute. I look at the data for the most recent 14 days for each site's review. In my newest tests, WP Engine proved incredibly stable. In fact, WP Engine didn't go down once during that two week testing period. As long as it keeps on this course, you can count on it deliver a rock-solid Web hosting experience.
Wordpress sites need dependable hosting that fits with their algorithms & setup. WP Engine has just the right hosting IMO for Wordpress, the sites run very smoothly and they are very secure. I'm able to upload some large photos without any issue. If you are sick of having your Wordpress site lag or are just having any issues with uploading, you should make the switch to WP Engine Hosting.
Site speed is a major differentiator for WP Engine. It’s one of the key hallmarks of our platform which set us apart from our competitors. The technology behind this includes single-click CDN integration, our custom NGINX extension, and SSD technology. The CDN drastically cuts time waiting for assets and ensures resources are freed up for important requests. The NGINX integration provides a better experience for your visitors by prioritizing human requests over automated system requests. And the SSD technology works to avoid RAM saturation and improves backend rendering. For a deeper dive on our technology stack, check out this page.
And then there’s a separate level of managed WordPress Hosting where you are not really buying hosting per se – but rather services to keep your WordPress install live. Basically, a Managed WordPress Hosting service offers a menu of services tailored to WordPress at a higher price point, so that the website owner can focus less on speed + security and more on the website content + functionality.
Our actionable insights tools, like Page Performance and Content Performance are always a hit. Overall however, our most popular tool would be Application Performance. It provides code-level visibility to help teams troubleshoot faster, optimize their WordPress experiences, and increase development agility. It gives development and IT operation teams the visibility they need to build and maintain great WordPress digital experiences.
And like speed & performance, WP Engine basically takes all those best practices and does them for you. They run automated backups to keep everything off-site & ready to roll back if something happens. Since you technically have an “install” on their server (rather than an account) – they tackle a lot of security issues globally on the server level.
We have slower speeds with WPE in comparison to a cheaper route with a collo or digitalocean. Also if you run ads on your site, they have no solution for you. You still need to find a host for your ads, in which case you might as well host wp there as well. Its that or allow yourself to be a part of the game where WPE steals clients with shady business practices that hurt not just the developers but also their own customers.
By default, sites hosted at WP Engine with page that ends in a number, (e.g. example.com/page/1) or in a query arg, (e.g. example.com/mypage/?myproduct=name), will be redirected to the page before the number or query arg sequence begins (site.com/page, site.com/category, site.com/mypage/).* This setting, known as “Redirect Bots”, is a major SEO issue as it will limit Google bots to discover content on your site and impact website PageRank flow through your site.
