Any serious WordPress site needs four things: security, speed, scalability, and service. Usually you can find a company that gives you one or two of these. Occasionally three, almost never four. On a scale of one to ten, I give them an eleven!
Malicious code can embed itself into a website by writing to the file-system. This occurs when a vulnerability is present in a theme or plugin that leaves the door open for malicious injection. The WP Engine environment limits the processes that can write to disk. So even if you’re using a theme or a plugin with a vulnerability, it is harder for them to be exploited.

If you approach them with any issue, they blame it on the developer. This is so they can sell you developer services, getting your current developer fired. Imagine your coding a website for someone and someone comes in when you are not looking and puts a disallow on the site. You know the default is to only disallow the admin panel and you never created a robots.txt file, nor do you even have access to the robots.txt file from the sftp. As far as you are concerned it does not exist. You then get a call from your client screaming saying that they spoke with WPE who says it is a common mistake by a rookie developer. As far as I am concerned the only person responsible for the disallow is the person who puts it there. You cant force code and not take responsibility. What other code has been forced that the developer will get blamed for?
The WP Engine PHP Compatibility Checker can be used by any WordPress website on any web host to check PHP version compatibility. When updating to PHP 7.2+ this is a great plugin to install and check if your website will not break after your update. many themes are not ready for PHP 7+ and will cause major issues. So the WP Engine team wanted to give back to the WordPress community by developing a plugin that will help you make sure you are safe to update your PHP version. The plugin will check the code of any other plugins and themes and give you back a report with compatibility issues so you can fix it before updating. And like speed & performance, WP Engine basically takes all those best practices and does them for you. They run automated backups to keep everything off-site & ready to roll back if something happens. Since you technically have an “install” on their server (rather than an account) – they tackle a lot of security issues globally on the server level.

WPE servers are great, support is a little off the mark. Longer wait times than I like for what you pay. Support is slow too, these guys are doing 3-4 tickets at once. No ticketing system really so issues need to be watched, you sit on chat till its solved. Not ideal imo. They try but seems like a lot of red tape etc. Simple things like SSL take a long time.
