I self-hosted WordPress for years until I started experiencing crashes every time a post made it to the first page of Hacker News. I switched to WP Engine right before speaking at a major event. Not only did my blog survive the traffic spike, but I’ve doubled the number of subscribers since then and haven’t experienced a single outage yet. It’s nice to pay someone to handle all the hosting BS that we’re no good at. They’re WordPress Pros.
Emily Gall – WPEngine has been a dream to work with. As a small agency, I’m really looking for the best service at the best value when it comes to hosting for my clients. WPEngine delivers everything I need including AMAZING support, a learnable interface, insights and most importantly reliable, lightning fast hosting services. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for a high-powered hosting service.
Unfortunately, WP Engine's toll-free, 24/7 telephone support isn't available to people who've signed up for the Startup plan; you must be at least a Growth subscriber to get someone on the horn aroudn the clock. Otherwise, you're limited to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (CST) hours. This could prove vexing if you're a Startup customer who wants to speak to a human being at 3 in the morning. At $35 per month, this seems a bit stingy. WP Engine compensates with 24/7 live chat, so you aren't totally left out in the cold if you're a Startup customer.

WP Engine is a great company to work for if you go anywhere but support. If you do go in for support get ready for a high stress levels as management will want to enforce metrics while not having a full understanding of the metrics to begin with. When you start out management will judge you almost immediately as they do have their favorites. This will affect advancement which is very slow paced than advertised unless you fall into said favoritism. Like anywhere else it is cut throat and other employees will not hesitate to point out mistakes as failures rather than making it a learning experience. The pay for support is grossly underpaid compared to other companies out there. The culture is great and that is about the only thing great as they do have out of work functions for team outings. Pros Free lunch, Culture, Environment Cons Management, Long Hours, Office Politics.
Shortly after Google Penguin (which WHSR took a big hit), I decided to change and started rebuilding everything from ground zero. The idea was to grow WHSR into a web service provider, build a community around ourselves, and rely less on Google traffic. That was the time when WHSR Uptime Monitor was made and we switched back to conventional VPS hosting environment.

With a 99.95% service availability guarantee, WP Engine has above-average reliability. The company's support portal provides nice access to a knowledgebase for the most commonly asked questions regarding WP Engine services, site migration, and common WordPress problems. In addition, the support staff is available via online chat, phone, and a ticketing system. Furthermore, the folks who are helping you are WordPress experts and can almost always help point you in the right direction.

Traditional Hosts: Beware of this new breed of hosting. WP Engine removes the need for a caching plugin. They’re faster than 97% of all websites tested by Pingdom. WP Engine enables your site to be as fast without the optimization tricks. Their support has earned an A+ in my book. The WP Engine staging area is a favorite of my development team, no more developing on a live platform. That gives them a hat trick.
Speed – WP Engine works exclusively with WordPress, meaning our platform is completely optimized to deliver fast, secure WordPress experiences. And as mentioned above, we use a bespoke combination of technologies to ensure high levels of site performance. All these work in harmony to accomplish an average page load times improvement of 38% when moving from other hosting companies. The WP Engine platform is designed to scale so there is no reduction in speed as customers’ sites and business scales.
Some plugins may expose a website to vulnerabilities. Most of the time, this is unintentional, but we still have to draw a line in the sand. Our system scanner searches for these plugins and automatically disables them. Besides disabling plugins for security reasons, plugins can also be disallowed for performance reasons. Our comprehensive list of disallowed plugins (along with explanations as to why they are disallowed) can be found here. You can read more about WP engine security environment here.
